Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are tiny, vibrant birds known for their iridescent feathers and rapid, hovering flight. The most common species in North America, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, features a shimmering green back and a brilliant red throat on males. Females are less colorful, with green backs and white underparts.

HUMMINGBIRD BACKYARD TIPS

In addition to their hum, hummingbirds make a variety of high-pitched calls and chirps, often used during territorial disputes or courtship displays. Their vocalizations are sharp and quick, adding to their energetic presence.

To attract hummingbirds, offer a continuous supply of nectar, either from nectar-rich flowers like trumpet vine and bee balm or from hummingbird feeders filled with a simple sugar-water mixture (1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water, without red dye and be sure to boil the mixture to ensure that the sugar is fully dissolved). Do not use honey, molasses, brown sugar, or artificial sweeteners.  This will cause a fungus to grow on their tongues.  Opt for feeders with red or bright colour accents, as the color attracts hummingbirds, and make sure to clean and refill them regularly to prevent mold and fermentation.

Hummingbirds do not use traditional birdhouses. Instead, they build tiny, cup-shaped nests on slender branches, often using soft plant materials and spider silk. To encourage nesting, plant small trees or shrubs, and provide a garden with abundant flowers and natural materials for nest-building.  A small hummingbird nesting platform can be added in a discreet protected area.
