Orioles
Orioles are vibrant songbirds known for their striking colors and melodious songs. The most common species, the Baltimore Oriole, is easily identified by its bright orange and black plumage in males, while females are more yellow-orange with grayish wings. Another species, the Orchard Oriole, is smaller, with males displaying a deep chestnut color rather than bright orange. The female is slender with soft pale yellow feathers. Both species have sharp, pointed beaks.
ORIOLE BACKYARD TIPS
Orioles are known for their rich, flute like songs that consist of a series of clear, whistled notes. They also make chattering calls and a “chuck” sound, often heard during feeding or in flight. Their musical songs are one of the highlights of spring and early summer.
To attract orioles, offer foods like orange halves, red grapes cut in half, grape jelly, and nectar. Specialized oriole feeders with large perches are ideal, as they are designed to hold these treats. Orioles are particularly drawn to the color orange, so using feeders with orange accents can be beneficial.
Orioles do not use traditional birdhouses. Instead, they weave intricate, hanging nests from fibers, often suspended from the ends of tree branches. To encourage orioles to nest nearby, plant tall trees or shrubs with accessible branches, and provide natural fibers like string or pet hair during the nesting season. This will help make your yard a welcoming environment for these stunning birds.
