Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are easily identified by their strong, chisel-like beaks, which they use to drill into trees. They typically have striking patterns of black, white, and red on their bodies, with some male species featuring bold red caps or patches. Their stiff tail feathers provide support as they cling to tree trunks, and their zygodactyl feet (two toes pointing forward and two backward) give them a strong grip.

WOODPECKER BACKYARDS TIPS

Woodpeckers are known for the distinctive drumming sounds they make on trees, which they use to communicate and to find food. They also have a variety of calls, ranging from sharp “peek” sounds to rolling “rattle” calls. These sounds are a key way to identify their presence.

To attract woodpeckers, offer suet, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and mealworms. They prefer feeders that allow them to cling vertically, such as specialized woodpecker suet feeders with tail props and  peanut feeders. Placing feeders near trees or wooded areas will increase the likelihood of attracting them.

Woodpeckers typically nest in tree cavities, either natural or excavated by themselves. Downy woodpeckers will use a birdhouse with a 1.25-inch opening, or you can provide a woodpecker house with a 2-inch entrance hole for larger woodpeckers, placed high on a tree or post in a wooded area. Ensure the house is made of durable wood and is at least 10-20 feet off the ground for best results.  Ensure the opening to the nest box is facing away from prevailing winds.
