Juncos
Juncos are small, sparrow-like birds with distinctive coloration that varies by region. The most common type, the Dark-eyed Junco, is easily recognized by its slate-gray body, white belly, and pinkish beak. These birds are often seen hopping along the ground in search of food, especially during the winter months.
JUNCO BACKYARDS TIPS
Juncos have a simple yet pleasant song, consisting of a series of musical trills and chips. Their call is a soft “tchip” or “tick,” often heard as they forage in groups. Their quiet vocalizations add a subtle charm to their presence in your yard.
To attract juncos, provide seeds such as millet, cracked corn, and sunflower hearts. Since they are ground feeders, juncos prefer to eat from platform feeders close to the ground or directly from the ground itself. Scatter seeds in areas with some cover, like beneath shrubs, to make them feel secure.
Juncos typically don’t use birdhouses. Instead, they build their nests on the ground or low in shrubs, often hidden in dense foliage or grass. To encourage nesting, create a natural habitat with thick vegetation, where juncos can find safe spots to raise their young.
